Circa 1930

THE ITEM

Oak roll top desk with four drawers on either side of the chair opening and nine cubbies and two drawers beneath the rollmop.

THE HISTORY

This vintage pine roll top desk with oak veneer was used by Younger Scott (Y. S.) Ready, Sr., who started the Lewisville Water Dept., in the restored building now known as the Well House located in front of Lewisville City Hall on Church Street. During this time, the Lewisville Water Department also included one jail cell in the building. When the jail cell was occupied, a lady in Mr. Ready’s family cooked and delivered food for the inmate.

Lewisville did not have any water meters when the water department began. Each resident paid a flat fee monthly for their water, from a well that was pumped into a tower and then pumped to each home. Mr. Ready watched over the pumps daily. Mr. Ready and his wife Rosa had four children; 3 daughters and one son.

Donated by the Ready, Houston, and Nowlin Families and others in May 2010.
