THE ITEM
An oval-shaped piece of paper coated in heavy clear plastic laminate, measuring approx. 5.75 inches by 3.5 inches, attached to a piece of black elastic to create an armband. It is printed on the front with information about the 1969 NHRA Nationals and the tag “NHRA Photographer” in red, white, and blue. The reverse side is white with a small blue printing stamp naming Mason Badge in Los Angeles. The NHRA Spring Nationals were held at Dallas International Motor Speedway in Lewisville on June 15, 1969.
THE HISTORY
This armband was used by Tim Marshall, a freelance photographer who had photos published in all of the national drag racing magazines. His career that lasted almost five decades included stints as Photo Editor of Hot Rod Magazine and at Super Stock & Drag Illustrated. Marshall died January 21, 2018, at age 71.
