1976 Boat Flag – Texas Bicentennial Navy

THE ITEM

A vinyl flag measuring approx. 18 inches by 12 inches with pointed ends at top and bottom. The top half of the flag is red with white lettering that reads “Texas Bicentennial.” the bottom half of the flag is white with blue lettering that reads “Navy” and “State Headquarters Lewisville, Texas.” The end of the flag features a blue border with white stars and the center has a round logo that reads “Official Seal for the Bicentennial Navy – State of Texas.”

THE HISTORY

According to Tommye Sartain (2019), City Manager Johnny Sartain and Assistant City Manager Jim Elium each received a flag from a visiting Navy admiral. Flag dimensions are about 18″ by 12″.


Texas Monthly, July 1976, page 109, “The Best of Texas” by Richard West: Best Bicentennial Excess Lewisville. The city fathers propose to “establish the first inland Bicentennial navy to help emphasize the important contributions the navy has made to the freedom of our country.” Landlocked Lewisville is 21 miles north of Dallas.
